Jaw Surgery in your 40s: The derailed Train Tracks
So I started a blog in 2009 about my train track journey. I had missed out on a vital dental interventions that would cause lasting harm to my jaw development and facial structures. I had a weak chin and jaw and overcrowding. I thought by conceding my wisdom teeth it would make enough space but they wanted my bicuspids too. I refused citing cases where doing so aged people’s faces. Truth is I was terrified of losing healthy teeth. So by 2011 that experiment was failed and I took thebraces off defeated. It would be a decade later when I would try again, with the attitude of saying yes, no matter how terrifying the risk. If I could jump 80 feet into the ocean to swim with sharks, I could redo braces. So can you. Don’t bother with the veneers, that’s cheating, you gotta put in the time and pain to get the lasting results.
I went with Dr. Markham in natomas for $7k for the surgical case and about a 3-4 year commitment starting in July 2022. My surgeon for the jaw was Dr. Lam and the results were worth it. I’m one week into the broken jaw recovery and here is what I recommend for surviving the ordeal.
#1 mentally prepare. For me as a foodie, it meant hitting up all my favorite restaurants so I wouldn’t miss them during my 6 week liquid fast. Also making a mental list of all of the prep I needed for work and getting coverage. Also getting my support team in the mix.
#2 stock up: get all the items from my Amazon store front you will thank me later. I have used all of these things and was better for it. Don’t bother buying ingredients for homemade soups, you won’t be in the mood. That said, don’t overdo the advance meal prep. I totally underestimated how disinterested I would be with eating.

#3 self care self care self care: put your phone on do not disturb, queue up your audiobooks on libby, get your video games out, your palo santo sticks for meditation, whatever gets you into your happy place and have it ready for your time in confinement. Think of this time as Covid lockdown 2.0. Your sole focus is recovery don’t be distracted! Fuck your plants. Fuck your pets. Fuck dem kids. Fuck Pilates. Fuck the laundry. Fuck Cooking and cleaning. Automate self feeders or find somebody else to do it. Be the selfish bitch who puts you first in everything, if it doesn’t spark joy, don’t do it. Jaw surgery is huge and if you don’t want to end up with permanent damage, you will concentrate 24/7 on treatments and resting to give yourself the best chance of beating permanent nerve damage .
